Distilled in 1996 and bottled in 2018, this release of Ben Nevis has been matured for 21 long years in a sherry cask. A colloboration between The Whisky Agency and the Liquor Library, this bottle continues the run of excellent 1996 Ben Nevis bottlings. We don't often see a Ben Nevis in sherry for such a long time, but the fruits of this cask are exceptional.
Nose: Starts with a soft and salty sea breeze before progressing into a lovely citrus and sourdough back nose. Hiding underneath the salty style is a freshly peeled mandarin and strawberries just picked from the field. Lovely and gentle fruit which is complimented well by the citrus.
Palate: The mandarins from the nose note can be found here almost immediately and are wonderfully complemented by a soft tropical guava flavour. Airy and delicate with a beautiful sherry richness at the back of the mouth, this palate develops as it flows into a lovely and chewy affair. Some light sweetness from the chewyness that is complimented by lemon peel and toffee.
Finish: Ripe cherries hit the roof of the mouth thanks to the sherry influence and linger until a strong burst of citrus hits the back of the mouth. A delicate smoke can be found but is generally rounded well and softended by sherry notes. Oily and chewy at the end.
