Neisson
Neisson Rhum Agricole
Neisson is one of the most respected producers of rhum agricole from Martinique, known for its small-scale production and precise, aromatic style. Founded in 1931 in the village of Le Carbet, the distillery remains family-owned and is recognised as the smallest operating distillery within the Martinique AOC.
Despite its modest size, Neisson has built a strong international reputation among rum enthusiasts and reviewers for producing rhums that capture the freshness and character of Martinique’s cane.
Estate Cane & Production
Unlike molasses-based rum, rhum agricole is distilled from fresh sugar cane juice, meaning the quality and handling of the cane are essential to the final spirit.
Neisson cultivates cane on the volcanic slopes surrounding the distillery, focusing particularly on Red Cane varietals (Canne Rouge) that produce highly aromatic juice. Harvested cane is crushed quickly to preserve freshness before fermentation begins.
The juice ferments slowly, allowing the development of grassy, citrus and tropical fruit aromas before distillation.
Creole Column Distillation
Distillation takes place on a traditional Creole column still, producing a spirit that retains the natural aromatic character of the cane.
The distillate is then reduced with volcanic spring water, giving Neisson rhums a distinctive crisp and mineral structure.
This approach produces rhums that are often described as elegant, aromatic and precise, rather than heavy or overly sweet.
The Neisson Range
Neisson produces both unaged and aged rhums.
The Neisson Blanc 52.5% is widely regarded as a benchmark agricole blanc, showing vibrant aromas of fresh cane, citrus peel, herbs and tropical fruit.
Aged expressions expand the range, including:
- Elevé Sous Bois / VO – lightly aged rhums with early oak influence
- VSOP – richer texture with vanilla, spice and dried fruit notes
- Vintage bottlings – limited releases matured for longer periods in oak
The tropical ageing climate of Martinique allows rhums to develop complexity relatively quickly, producing balanced spirits even at younger ages.
Why Neisson Stands Out
Among Martinique distilleries, Neisson stands out for several reasons:
- Small production scale, allowing careful attention to every stage
- Strong focus on estate agriculture
- Extended fermentation times for aromatic development
- Precise Creole column distillation
These factors contribute to a style that many enthusiasts regard as one of the clearest expressions of traditional rhum agricole.
