In rum, it can be older vintages, single casks, or highly sought-after releases where age and cask management have produced a dense, layered spirit. In agave, it can be small production mezcal from specific agave varieties, or special tequila releases made in limited quantities.

Look for: clear production information, trustworthy bottling provenance, age and cask details where available, and a realistic sense of whether the bottle is for opening or collecting. If it is to open, make sure the style matches the palate. A smoky, heavily peated whisky can be a dream bottle for one person and a regret for another.
