Every now and again, a whisky comes along that stops us in our tracks. This is one of those whiskies.

Selected and bottled to celebrate Casa de Vinos’ 16th anniversary, this 25-year-old Ben Nevis is only the third whisky in our history to carry our legacy label. We reserve this label for the very best casks – whiskies we believe possess the character, quality and pedigree to become truly legendary releases.

Distilled at Ben Nevis in 1998 and matured for 25 years in a single hogshead, this whisky captures everything that has earned the distillery its cult following among whisky enthusiasts around the world. It is beautifully textured and wonderfully complex, combining ripe orchard and tropical fruits with honey, wax, soft oak and the distinctive chalky minerality for which old Ben Nevis is so highly prized.

Give it a little time in the glass and it continues to unfold, revealing creamy pineapple, passionfruit and malty mango pastries. This is a whisky made to be enjoyed slowly – and one we are incredibly proud to have bottled for this milestone.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Peach and apple pastries, fresh banana and orange marmalade spread over lightly toasted sourdough. Subtle mango cream, grapefruit soda and orange blossom honey follow, with dusty cedar, ginger candy and damp, clay-like minerality.

Palate: Rich and oily, with mineral-led stone fruit, honeycomb, ripe banana and baked apple. Fresh red apple skins and dusty orange build through the palate, balanced by soft oak, beeswax and gentle wax driven malt.

Finish: Long and expressive, with dry Chenin Blanc and white peach giving way to dusty oak, soft beeswax and honeydew melon. The fruit and waxy malt linger beautifully, accompanied by a final touch of Ben Nevis minerality.

Overall: A beautifully mature and deeply characterful Ben Nevis, bottled under a label we use only for whiskies of the highest calibre.

Ben Nevis

Ben Nevis Distillery was founded in 1825 below its namesake, Scotland’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis. After nearly closing in the 80’s due to the global “Whisky Loch”, Ben Nevis was purchased by the Japanese company Nikka Whisky in 1989. Today, Ben Nevis produces a core range of whiskies including a 10 year old, with a majority of their stock being sent in bulk to Japan for blending purposes. Their independently bottled whiskies, especially those from 1995-1999 are highly sought after by enthusiasts for their depth of flavour and bright tropical mineral fruit forward profile, most likely due to Ben Nevis’ use of brewer's yeast during that period.
