Saint James

Saint James Rhum Agricole

Saint James is one of the most historic rum producers in the Caribbean and a major name in the tradition of Martinique rhum agricole. Founded in 1765 in the town of Sainte-Marie on the north-east coast of the island, the distillery has played an important role in the development and international recognition of agricole rhum.

Today, Saint James produces a wide range of rhums blancs and aged expressions that reflect the agricultural traditions of Martinique while maintaining the distinctive character that has defined the house style for generations.

History of Saint James

The Saint James estate traces its origins to the mid-18th century, when sugar plantations across Martinique began distilling rum from molasses and, increasingly, from fresh sugar cane juice. The distillery quickly became known for exporting its rhums to international markets.

In the 19th century Saint James was among the first producers to ship rum in glass bottles rather than wooden casks. This decision helped establish the brand in export markets and led to the now-iconic square bottle, designed for efficient transport and storage on ships.

Over time Saint James became one of the best-known rum houses of Martinique, contributing to the global reputation of rhum agricole and helping establish the traditions that continue today under the AOC Martinique appellation.

Location and Terroir

The distillery is located in Sainte-Marie, a region known for fertile volcanic soils and a tropical climate well suited to sugar cane cultivation. Much of the cane used in Saint James rhum comes from plantations surrounding the distillery.

These conditions allow the production of cane with strong aromatic intensity, an essential component in rhum agricole, where the spirit is distilled directly from fresh cane juice rather than molasses.

Production and Distillation

Saint James rhum agricole begins with freshly harvested cane that is crushed to extract juice. The juice is fermented before distillation on a Creole column still, the traditional type of still used across Martinique.

This style of distillation preserves the aromatic character of the cane while producing a spirit with clarity and structure. The resulting distillate forms the basis for both unaged rhums blancs and a wide range of aged expressions.

Maturation takes place in oak casks under tropical conditions, allowing the rhum to develop depth, spice and texture over time.

House Style

Saint James rhums are often recognised for their structured and robust profile within the Martinique agricole tradition.

Typical characteristics include:

  • Fresh cane and herbal notes
  • Citrus and tropical fruit
  • Spice and oak influence in aged expressions
  • A firm, structured palate

This style contrasts with the lighter and more delicate approach seen at some smaller distilleries, illustrating the diversity of rhum agricole produced across Martinique.

Saint James Today

Today Saint James continues to produce a wide range of rhums including vibrant rhums blancs, aged rhums vieux and vintage releases. The distillery remains one of the most recognisable names in Martinique rum and an important ambassador for the agricole tradition.

Within the broader category of Martinique rhum, Saint James stands alongside other historic producers such as Neisson, Rhum JM, Clément, Depaz and La Favorite.
