Ichiro's Malt & Grain World Blended Whisky 700ml | 46.5% ABV

Ichiro's Malt & Grain is a world blended whisky assembled at Chichibu Distillery under Ichiro Akuto's direction. It combines Japanese malt whisky with selected Scotch, Irish, Canadian and American whiskies, bringing several whisky traditions into one deliberately balanced blend.

Akuto founded Venture Whisky Ltd. in 2004, four years before Chichibu Distillery itself began production in 2008. Since then, the distillery has built its reputation on hands-on techniques including floor malting and direct-fired stills, along with investment in local barley cultivation — methods most producers moved away from decades ago.

The imported components are matured in their countries of origin before travelling to Chichibu for further maturation and blending. This additional time in Japan helps integrate the grain, malt and oak influences while preserving the lighter, fruit-led character associated with Ichiro's blending style.

The nose opens with apricot, popcorn toffee, vanilla cream and lemon zest. The palate is light but layered, moving through toffee, roasted chestnut, gingerbread, vanilla and black pepper. Honey and pepper remain through the medium-long finish.

This is the core white-label Malt & Grain release and a useful introduction to Chichibu's blending work. It's a world blended whisky, not a Japanese whisky made solely from Japanese distillate.

At 46.5%, it has enough structure for neat drinking while remaining approachable in a highball. The emphasis is on integration rather than one dominant cask or region: Japanese malt supplies the centre, and the world-whisky components build texture, sweetness and spice around it.
