16.1 continues the distillery’s mission to prove that peat doesn’t have to mean one-dimensional whisky. Built on super-heavily peated Islay malt and matured entirely in ex-bourbon casks, it is the cleanest read on the spirit in the new series. It shows the raw Octomore DNA: ash, grilled citrus, salt spray and sweet barley wrapped around a dense, oily texture.

Bruichladdich’s Octomore project has always been about asking harder questions of peat and provenance. The malt is peated to extreme levels, distilled slowly and matured on Islay. The result is power with precision rather than just smoke for the sake of it. 16.1 leans into bourbon cask clarity – vanilla, coconut and honey – while still delivering that long, coastal finish that keeps Octomore fans chasing each new edition.

Nose: An intriguing opening of sea spray and orchard fruits, enveloped by Octomore’s delicate peat smoke. Fine florals of dried heather and camomile emerge, followed by subtle vanilla bean and toasted almond. Cedar, smoked paprika and iodine add complex savoury notes.

Palate: Immediate, yet gentle, peat smoke followed by salted caramel, honeyed melon and apricot. Sweet malt sugars intermingle with cinnamon and star anise. Sea salt, toffee, chocolate and coconut follow, accompanied by a soft wave of earthy minerality and lingering smoke.

Finish: The finish is long and lingering, with the signature peat smoke taking centre stage. Black pepper and toffee intertwine with sea salt, creating a complex and satisfying conclusion.
