Kanosuke Double Distillery brings together two sides of the Komasa family’s whisky making in Kagoshima: single malt from Kanosuke Distillery and pot still whisky from Hioki Distillery. At 53% ABV, it offers ripe fruit, rounded sweetness and warming spice, with a rich but mellow palate.

Two distilleries, one family

Kanosuke makes its single malt in copper pot stills. At Hioki, malted and unmalted barley are distilled in stainless-steel pot stills, drawing on the family’s experience making shochu. These different ingredients and methods give the blenders two distinct styles to work with.

Double Distillery combines the two as a blended Japanese whisky. The distinction matters: although both components are pot distilled, Hioki’s use of unmalted barley means this is not a blend made exclusively from malt whisky.

Tasting notes by Casa de Vinos

Nose: Vanilla, melon, peach and apricot, with fresh mint and lemongrass.

Palate: Rich but mellow, with cinnamon, black tea, orange and clove.

Finish: Oaky and full of fruit, with a touch of bitterness balancing the sweetness.

Double Distillery is a good choice if you like generous fruit and sweetness alongside oak and spice. It also makes an interesting comparison with Kanosuke Single Malt or Hioki Pot Still, showing how their different characters come together.
